Wall Street Journal – New Competition Threatens Fiji Airline

November 3rd, 2009 No comments

The Wall Street Journal reports that Jetstar and V Australia are adding flights from Australia to Fiji, challenging Air Pacific’s domination of the Fiji market. This should result in lower prices for consumers, but poses problems for Air Pacific.

Air Pacific, which is 51% owned by the Fiji government, said last month it recorded a loss of 12.4 million Fiji dollars (US$6.6 million) for the year ended March 31, compared with a profit of 38.15 million Fiji dollars the previous year. It also forecast a much larger loss for the year ending March 31, 2010 as competition intensifies further.

Many tour operators in Fiji welcome the competition, saying more flights into the country—and potentially lower fares—will help restore Fiji’s ailing tourism sector, which accounts for roughly one-quarter of the local economy.
