Wall Street Journal Reports on Fiji’s Discounts
Today’s Travel section of the Wall Street Journal writes about Paradise on Sale, which focuses on the great vacation discounts available for Fiji right now. Fiji’s tourism industry is slumping due to a combination of factors, including the recession, natural catastrophes and Fiji’s political situation. Also, other South Pacific countries such as the Cook Islands have been aggressively marketing themselves, drawing away more visitors.
Hotels are discounting as much as 50% off their listed rates. Deep discounts are expected to continue into 2010, but will this solve Fiji’s problems or just make them worse?
Hoteliers are cutting prices so drastically, some regular visitors are starting to fear Fiji could become too inexpensive. Richard Miall, managing director of Fiji Island Tours, an Australian firm, says top-end Fiji resorts, especially in the outer islands, are among the best in the world, but “there are too many rooms” in Fiji. The country’s hoteliers have no choice but to discount, he says, but discounting “is cheapening the product.”
