Sunny Fong’s 2010 Collection Inspired by French Polynesia

October 20th, 2009 No comments

It certainly seems that Polynesia is taking center stage for Spring/Summer 2010! First, Catherine Malandrino’s show at New York’s Fashion Week featured Polynesian inspired pieces with beautiful green-blue colors. Now designer Sunny Fong has unveiled his collection at Toronto’s Fashion Week which melds cutting edge fashion with island flair. His “Tattoo Hibiscus” collection includes khaki colored neutrals as well as vivid red and pink colors. The dress below, with its multi-colored and delicate layers, certainly reminds me of the hibiscus flower.

Air Tahiti Nui Email: Early Bird Special $954 flights

September 15th, 2009 No comments
Air Tahiti Nui has sent an email reminding us about their Early Bird Special, which I first posted about last week. The email also lists a few flight + hotel packages that take advantage of this promotion. If you’re thinking about going, I’d recommend the Moorea package (stay at the Intercontinental) or the Bora Bora package (I have no experience with the hotels listed, but Bora Bora is a stunning island).

2,500 Miles in a Double Hulled Canoe

August 25th, 2009 No comments

According to this Yahoo news story, preparations are underway to recreate the epic voyage of Polynesia’s ancestors. Next year, the Pacific Voyaging Canoes project plans to sail a fleet of 6 double-hulled canoes from French Polynesia to Hawaii. That’s a whopping 2,500 miles! No word yet as to how long they expect this journey to take.

If you’ve seen the BBC series “Wild Pacific”, one of the episodes talks about how the Polynesian ancestors migrated to the islands, constructing sturdy sailing vessels and relying on the sun, stars and other cues from nature for navigation. It’s fascinating to think that these ancient people sailed out into the unknown and happened upon far-flung lands, from New Zealand all the way to Hawaii!
