Island Profile: Maui

August 24th, 2009 No comments

In honor of Hawaii’s recent 50th anniversary of statehood, today’s island profile focuses on Hawaii’s famous island of Maui. Known as a favorite destination among honeymooners, Maui also offers something for family vacations,  getaways with friends and singles alike. Maui is a must-see island for anyone planning a visit to Hawaii – it offers beautiful scenery and a more laid-back “island” experience than the crowded scene of Honolulu. If you’re looking for a relaxing Hawaiian vacation while still having plenty of activities to choose from, then Maui is the place for you!

Best Time to Go

If you’re flexible with dates, head to Maui in May, September or October. These months correspond with the dry season, which runs from May-October. In addition, you’ll avoid the crowds and higher prices during the wedding/family vacation season (summer) and Christmas holidays/escape-from-the-cold season (winter).

Things to Do

Road to Hana – Enjoy Maui’s beautiful scenery and landscapes on this popular half day/full day trip. You can rent a car and make the leisurely 3 hour drive (one-way) yourself, or arrange with a tour company to provide a private car/driver. If you’re looking to splurge, do a combination drive/fly tour – take a morning drive to Hana and get a helicopter ride back to your hotel in the early afternoon!

Snorkeling at Molokini – Don’t miss this unique opportunity to snorkel in a volcanic caldera.  The crystal clear waters give you excellent visibility, and you’ll be dazzled by the array of underwater sea life. Some tour operators also offer SNUBA (a cross between snorkeling and scuba) and SCUBA (for certified divers).

Haleakala Crater – Maui’s largest volcano can be explored in a variety of ways. You can take a traditional sightseeing tour or opt for a luxury helicopter tour. For the adventurous types, there’s also hiking, bicycling, horseback riding or ATV riding tours available. Best option? Ascend to the summit of Haleakala before sunrise and witness the spectacular event at the top of the volcano.

Old Lahaina Luau – Known as Maui’s best luau show. Make sure to book in advance.

Where to Eat

Mama’s Fish House – Be prepared to splurge for delicious but expensive seafood with a view.

Hali’imaile General Store – Delicious food with an emphasis on local produce.  Don’t miss the top-notch seafood.

Fish Market Maui – Enjoy fresh and inexpensive food in a casual setting.

Honokowai Deli and Okazuya – One of Maui’s best bargains. Very small so it’s best for take-out.
